A centrifuge is a piece of equipment generally driven by an electric motor and works on a sedimentation principle where the centripetal acceleration causes dense substances to separate out and lighter objects to move to the top.
Industrial centrifuges can be classified based on the high density to low density fraction type of separation and include:
Screen centrifuges - the centrifugal acceleration allows the liquid to pass through a screen and solids cannot penetrate. This occurs due to a larger granulometry than the screen gap or due to agglomeration. Common types of screen centrifuges include: Pusher centrifuges and peeler centrifuges
Decanter centrifuges - there is no physical separation between the solid and liquid phase, rather an accelerated settling due to centrifugal acceleration. Common types include: Solid bowl centrifuges and conical plate centrifuges
Other commonly used centrifuges include:
• Disk centrifuges
• Solid basket centrifuges
• Perforated basket centrifuges
• Pusher centrifuges
• Peeler centrifuges
• Chamber bowl centrifuges
